Green Fishing Spoon

Green Fishing Spoon

Fishing spoons are a lure for any season because of the variety of spoons that are available on the market. Since the fishing spoon is very popular all over the world it has become so evolved that there is a spoon for any species and any season.

When you are considering which lure to use there are three factors which are the most important. Those are Action, Color and Size. Below we will discuss these three factors more in depth one by one.

The water temperature that a certain species of fish preferres should define your spoon action. For example, if you are after Brown Trout in water that has a temperature of 40 degrees, which is around 20 degrees below what they prefer (from 59 to 65 degrees), then you should use slower lure action. You can achieve slow lure action either with a slower retrieve rate when casting or with a slower boat speed.

Fishing Spoon Color

The spoons color is a big factor for catching big fish. The one thing you should consider the most when you are choosing a lure is color. The colors of the rainbow come in handy here. On one end you have the colors red, orange and yellow which should be used in the water column with the most light. On the other end of the rainbow you have blue, indigo and violet, which should be used in darker and low light waters. This is pretty basic and can be explained in one sentence: Bright lures for bright conditions and dark lures for dark light.

There are also 2 neutral colors that can be used in any situation and those are white and silver. But since recently there is a new color specter to consider and those are glow in the dark colors. These lures will attract fish in dark or stained waters, and pretty successfuly from my experience.

Fishing Spoon Size

The last but nothing less important factor – size. Here you have a pretty simple rule, match lure size to the forage of your target.. If you have a slow fishing trip then you should try smaller size fishing spoons. When you are fishing in the sun, bigger lures can be a problem because they create too much flash and can scare away fish. If you see that you catch less and less as the sun goes higher then you should try a smaller lure.

When you go out to fish think about all of these factors to get the most out of your fishing trip. If you can adjust to the current situation that will help you catch a lot of fish!

Ice Jigging Spoons

Ice Jigging Spoons

Winter time can often be a slow time in fishing. Little to no biting action can be discouraging but you shouldn’t give up, just maybe try other things. Many people that i have talked to don’t carry in their boxes or have never even tried to catch fish with jigging spoons. They work for a variety of fish species, you could also get a nice bass with it. Jigging spoons have often helped me catch a bass in the winter when nothing else worked!

But since the winter time is a very special season for fishing you must also think differently then in the summer time. I mostly present my lure much slower and more precise to the baitfish location in the winter. You should locate areas near ledges where baitfish are extremelry intense on your fish radar. Deep points that have a gradual droop to deeper water are the best to start with. One thing doesn’t change throught the whole year and that is that baitfish will bring you to the feeding bass. You should vertically drop your jigging spoon to the depth where the bait is showing and jig it up and down directly over the bait. When the spoon moves up and down the suspending fish find it very hard to resist it. One tip: the bass will most of the time hit on the drop so be sure to keep very good contact with your bait! Since the strike is very subtle in winter time be sure to always watch the spoon so you can see its potential movement, or maybe there will only be a slack in the like or something like that.

Of course there are days when this also doesn’t work. Here is what i try then. I drop the spoon directly to the bottom and just drag it on the bottom. While dragging it i make just a few very subtle twitches. You can try many other things with jigging spoons and if you are creative enough you should catch a wide variety of fish or they should at least make a cold winter day into a lot of fun.
